In a momentous weekend for the film, Minding the Gap earned both the Best Documentary Feature Award and the Audience Choice Award at the Mountainfilm Festival, as well as the Special Jury Award for Bravery at the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival.
Mountainfilm's jury included Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, Medicine for Melancholy), Jeff Orlowski (Chasing Ice, Chasing Coral), and Roko Belic (Genghis Blues).
"There was one film that the three of us kept coming back to, kept gravitating towards, from a really talented filmmaker and a really sensitive filmmaker. There are so many issues that our country and our world are struggling with right now, and this film managed to interweave a bunch of them seamlessly."
Watch director Bing Liu accept the award for Mountainfilm's Best Documentary Feature:
Coming up, Minding the Gap makes its NY and UK premieres at BamcinemaFest and Sheffield Doc/Fest, respectively. Charlie Phillips wrote in his preview of the 2018 Sheffield Doc/Fest:
"Likely to provoke tears, Bing Liu's debut feature Minding the Gap offers tender stories of a group of Rust Belt skateboarding boys as they become men and have to deal with the troubles that a board and your friends can't solve. There haven't been many better documentaries about sensitive masculinity; there's a beautiful lack of sentimentality to Bing's depiction of time passing too quickly for comfort."
